Butyrate is a sodium-bound short-chain fatty acid (SCFA). It is produced by bacteria in the lower colon and absorbed by colonocytes (cells lining the colon). It then becomes an important food for these cells. A lack of beneficial bacteria in the colon can lead to an inadequate supply of butyrate. Butyrate cleanses the liver, gallbladder, and biliary system.
