The skin is your largest organ of elimination. When your liver and kidneys are working overtime, we can utilize the skin as a “pressure release valve.” This Emergency Detox Bath is my preferred clinical tool for shifting the body from a sympathetic (stress) state back into a parasympathetic (healing) state.

The “Herx-Helper” Recipe

Prepare this bath as soon as you feel the onset of “detox flu” symptoms.

  • 2 Cups Epsom Salts: High in magnesium sulfate to support the “Sulfation” pathway in the liver and relax muscle tension.

  • 1 Cup Baking Soda: Helps alkalize the water and neutralize chlorine (if you don’t have a tub filter), while soothing skin inflammation.

  • 5 Drops Lavender or Frankincense: Optional high-quality essential oils to lower cortisol and soothe the nervous system.

  • 1/2 Cup Bentonite Clay (Optional): As discussed in our Binder Hierarchy, clay has a strong negative charge that can help “pull” debris from the skin’s surface.

The Protocol: How to Soak Safely

  1. Water Temperature: Aim for “comfortably warm,” not “scalding.” If the water is too hot, it can actually increase systemic stress and worsen a headache.

  2. Duration: Soak for exactly 20 minutes. The first 10 minutes allow the body to absorb minerals; the final 10 minutes allow for the release of toxins.

  3. Hydration: Drink 8–12 ounces of filtered water with a pinch of sea salt while in the bath. This prevents dehydration and supports cellular mineral balance.

  4. The Cool Down: After the bath, rinse with cool water to “close” the pores and rest for at least 30 minutes.
